Vernier Callipers use an auxiliary scale that slides along the main scale allowing measurements of increased accuracy. As with other instruments there are a range of different types – standard calipers, dial calipers and digital calipers. Generally vernier calipers can measure to 0.02mm or 0.05mm accuracy.
Additionally some have jaws for inside measurements as well as those for outside measurements. Most also have a depth bar which can be used to measure the depths of holes etc.
When using a vernier calliper it is important to use the reference measuring faces rather than other areas on the jaws.
Tolerances and requirements for depth micrometers are specified in Australian Standard AS1984.
Metrology equipment of any sort should not be subjected to impact such as being dropped as they are easily damaged or become inaccurate.
METROLOGY EQUIPMENT APPLICATIONS
There are a wide range of different types of metrology equipment each with a host of applications. Although such equipment is in most cases robust, users need to ensure their equipment remain in good working order and accurate.
METROLOGY EQUIPMENT CALIBRATION PROCEDURES
Metrology equipment items are first cleaned and then checked to ensure that they are not damaged. They are then examined for accuracy over the range of use in accordance with the specific Standard or to specific manufacturer’s requirements if stated.
CMS uses calibrated state-of-the-art master equipment to verify that metrology equipment is measuring within requirements and adjusted if required.
Metrology equipment items are returned to clients with a comprehensive calibration report within three working days of receipt.
