External micrometers are available in a wide range of sizes and makes. Basic models have graduations on the rotating thimble and the sleeve. Digital micrometers provide direct readings.
Although the anvils are usually made of tungsten carbide care must always be taken to ensure they remain clean and undamaged. The ratchet is used to ensure a constant force is applied to the object being measured. Zero adjustments can be made where necessary by rotating the sleeve with a special spanner made for this purpose. When micrometers are not in use the jaws should be left slightly open because if they are left in the closed position this could distort the frame of the micrometer particularly in hot conditions.
Tolerances and requirements for external micrometers are specified in Australian Standard AS 2101.
Metrology equipment should not be subjected to impact such as being dropped as they are easily damaged or become inaccurate.
